Netflix has just released a trailer for the hotly-anticipated season 3 of Keri Russell series The Diplomat.

Starring The Americans protagonist as US ambassador Kate Wyler, the political thriller is upping the stakes for round three.

In the clip (which you can watch at the top of the article), Kate is dealing with the consequences of the jaw-dropping finale of season 2. Now US Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) has become President following the death of former POTUS Rayburn (Michael McKean).

Grace reunites with her husband Todd, with the trailer giving fans a first look at The Handmaid's Tale star Bradley Whitford in the role of First Gentleman. Season 3 marks a West Wing reunion for the two actors as they both starred on the political drama.

It seems that Kate and Todd will develop an ambiguous bond as another scene sees them in a pool together, looking suspiciously at each other from across the water.

What to Read Next

Season 2 ended on Kate being informed of Grace's involvement in the terrorist attack that kicked off the series. As tables have turned, Kate is now looking chummy with the new First Family, but how long will it be before it comes to blows?

With all the restrain her high-pressure job requires, Kate gives Todd an eloquent look when he asks her and his wife:" How was everyone's day at the office?"

It's never been a secret that Kate wants the Vice Presidency, but it isn't clear whether she'll get what she wanted in this new instalment.

What's certain is that fans will be treated to more of The Diplomat after season three, as the series – praised for its "binge-ability factor" in Rotten Tomatoes reviews – has already received a season four order at the streamer.

"In season three of The Diplomat, Ambassador Kate Wyler lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want," the official synopsis for season 3 reads.

"She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she's after the VP's job. But now the president is dead, Kate's husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world.

"None of this slows Hal's campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and an unnerving bond with first gentleman Todd Penn."

The Diplomat season 3 starts streaming on Netflix this autumn. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on the same platform now.
