Netflix has confirmed the cast for The Diplomat season three, sharing first-look images of them in action.

Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell will return to reprise their roles as Kate and Hal Wyler in the third season, with Allison Janney back as Vice President Grace Penn, who joined the political thriller in season 2.

Joining them in the next instalment is Bradley Whitford, who will play the Vice President's husband Todd Penn. It marks an on-screen reunion for Janney and Whitford who previously starred together in West Wing.

One first-look photo shows all four main cast members together at what appears to be an intimate dinner party, gathered round a table together holding various cocktails, and about to tuck into some oysters.

Another shows Janney and Whitford chatting to their guests off camera, seated on a sofa, with an additional photo teasing Russell and Sewell back as the unhappily married Wylers.

The third season of The Diplomat was confirmed ahead of season 2's premiere, which dropped on Netflix late last October.

Janney didn't make her debut as VP Grace Penn until episode five in season two, with her role - and her clash with Kate - expected to receive more screen time in season three.

Netflix has yet to confirm supporting cast members set to return for the next season, but we're expecting Bank of Dave's Rory Kinnear to be back as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge plus David Gyasi's Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison and aides Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval), Eidra Graham (Ali Ahn) and Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah).

The Diplomat season 1 and 2 are available to stream now on Netflix.
