The Woman in the Wall, a Gothic thriller set in the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, has appeared in Netflix's "worth the wait" section, and so is expected to arrive to the streaming platform soon. The BBC One drama first premiered in 2023, and centres on the character of Lorna Brady (played by Ruth Wilson) who wakes one day to find the body of a woman in her house, with no idea how it got there.

Her path soon crosses with Detective Colman Akande (Bad Sisters' Daryl McCormack) from Dublin, who is seeking her out in relation to a crime that seems unrelated to this mysterious corpse.

To add some further layers, Lorna suffers from extreme episodes of sleepwalking, and has done ever since she was pulled from her life and incarcerated in a fictional convent, inspired by the Magdalene laundries, at the age of 15.

Her daughter Agnes was born while she was there, but was taken from her – and Lorna, now an adult, is still searching for answers about where her child ended up.

"Lorna is a little bit of an oddball, an outsider and I felt deep affection for her immediately," Wilson said of her character in The Woman in the Wall.

"On the page she kept surprising me," she continued. "She starts as a mystery, probably even to herself but as the show progresses and more of her past and that of the community is revealed, you start to understand why Lorna behaves in the way she does."

What to Read Next

Wilson also described Lorna as "a survivor of a traumatic experience", adding: "She becomes a woman on a mission and throughout the course of the series, you see her gaining confidence and clarity about what she has been through and what she's looking to find and resolve."

Discussing what makes The Woman in the Wall stand out from other crime dramas and thrillers, Wilson explained: "I think it's probably the mash of tones to be honest. It's not just a crime drama, but a gothic horror, psychological drama, and a black comedy.

"When I first read the scripts, it reminded me of Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart', - it reads like a 19th century gothic thriller but then you realise it's contemporary, so it's a really unusual twist on those genre pieces."

Spanning six episodes, The Woman in the Wall is an emotional, brilliant, and twisty viewing experience that will keep you hitting the 'next episode' button until you have unraveled every element of its story.

This is one not to be missed.

The Woman in the Wall is expected to arrive on Netflix soon.
