Happy Gilmore 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Adam Sandler's comedy classic, has landed on Netflix, and critics are weighing in.
Garnering mixed views, the second instalment reunites Sandler with his 1996 cast members, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller.
The story follows a down-on-his-luck Happy as he comes out of retirement to fund his daughter Vienna's (Sunny Sandler) tuition for a Paris ballet academy.
Grading the film a B-, IndieWire quipped that "More often than not, it makes the shot" and commended Sandler on his comedic stylings, noting: "It is also often quite funny. Most of that humour comes care of Sandler, who slips back into Happy with something like grizzled ease."
Echoing this sentiment, Consequence described Happy Gilmore 2 as a "solid enough set-up for a legacy sequel" that has "enough freshness to the plot to keep it from feeling like a total rehash".

Meanwhile, Variety wrote that the movie offers a "pointed exercise in nostalgia, but with a present-tense edge".
"It's not some fake update of the clever/dumb brand of slob comedy that made Sandler a superstar in the '90s," the magazine states. "It's the genuine article, a true revival of Sandler's Jerry Lewis-meets-rock 'n' roll rage."
As for Slash Film, the publication has called the sequel an "absolute slog of a comedy" that "doesn't even have any real heart" and features "more professional golfers and pointless cameos than genuine laughs."

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Happy Gilmore 2 "feels extremely lazy and self-indulgent, especially Sandler's tendency to cast nearly everyone he's ever worked with or even met. The cameos here are so voluminous that you need a cheat sheet to keep up, although most of them barely make an impression."
While THR has described the movie as "terrible," the publication has mused that with it being "moronic, witless and relentlessly vulgar", fans of the original film will "love" it.
Happy Gilmore 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
