Netflix's television adaptation of the popular video game franchise Assassin's Creed has received a big update.

Back in 2020, the streaming service announced that they would be bringing an "epic, genre-bending live-action adaptation" of the video game series to the small screen.

Sharing an update on its progress on Thursday (17 July), Netflix confirmed that the series has now officially been greenlit with the arrival of two showrunners in the shape of David Wiener and Roberto Patino.

Wiener is known for his work on Halo and The Killing, while Patino has contributed to popular such as Westworld and Sons of Anarchy. In addition to their duties as showrunners, the pair will also serve as executive producers.

"We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007," they said in a joint statement. "Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us.

"Beneath the scope, spectacle, parkour and thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.

"But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species, when those connections break."

Ending the statement, Wiener and Patino thanked Netflix and Ubisoft, the French video game publisher who launched the game back in 2007, adding: "We’re committed to creating something undeniable for fans all over the planet."

Billed as a "high-octane" thriller, the new series will depict the "secret war" between two "shadowy factions", following the various characters across "pivotal historical events" as they "battle to shape humanity's destiny".
