September marks the beginning of autumn TV, which brings along with it some exciting new dramas – including a "gripping and twisted" new Prime Video series, as well as the highly-anticipated return of Michelle Keegan's beloved comedy Brassic (also marking its final ever outing).
There'll be plenty that you'll want to add to your watch lists, so continue reading for Digital Spy's recommendations of what to watch in September 2025.
The Guest
Kicking off the month with a 1 September release is the BBC’s anticipated new thriller The Guest, which has been described as an "addictive, fast-paced story" that centres on "the toxic and beguiling relationship between a successful business owner, Fran, and her employee, Ria."
These two main characters will be played by Eve Myles (Broadchurch) and Gabrielle Creevy (Black Doves), and the synopsis goes on to tease: "Ria has never had the time or opportunity to think about what she might actually want from the world. So, when she starts cleaning for Fran, she's intoxicated by this confident and self-assured woman who encourages her to take control of her life, and when Ria flourishes, an intense friendship is forged."
From there, it's been revealed that "a shocking event" occurs, meaning that "the lives of these two very different women become intertwined by shared secrets and dangerous plots…"
Task
This gritty new crime drama is from the same creator that brought us the phenomenal Mare of Easttown, which starred Kate Winslet as detective Marianne "Mare" Sheehan.
What to Read Next
Task will see Mark Ruffalo fill the shoes of this new show's central investigator, in the role of a Philadelphia FBI agent called to lead a new force.
The cast also features Ozark's Tom Pelphrey, Conversations with Friends' Alison Oliver, The Woman King's Thuso Mbedu and House of the Dragon's Fabien Frankel, and the series is due to launch on HBO in the US on 7 September and on Sky (and streaming on NOW) in the UK on 8 September.
Wayward
Starring Taskmaster and Feel Good star Mae Martin (who is also the show's creator, co-showrunner and executive producer), Netflix's new thriller has been described as a "thrilling and genre-bending limited series" (via Tudum).
The Netflix description reads: "A small-town cop suspects that the local school for troubled teens — and its dangerously charismatic founder — may not be all it seems…"
Landing on the streaming service from 25 September, the cast of this intriguing new drama also boasts the likes of Toni Collette (Hereditary), Sarah Gadon (Castle Rock) and Patrick J Adams (Suits).
Coldwater
ITV's new Scotland-set thriller Coldwater will arrive on our screens on 14 September, and it focuses on a middle-aged man named John, who is secretly raging at his life as a stay-at-home dad.
"When his failure to intervene in a violent confrontation in a playground brings his identity crisis to a head, John ups and moves his family to the rural idyll of Coldwater, as far away from London as possible," the synopsis teases.
The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln will play the leading role of John, while the rest of the cast also includes Eve Myles (The Crow Girl) and Indira Varma (Doctor Who).
Brassic
Fans of the beloved comedy drama Brassic will have to wave goodbye this September, as the award-winning series airs its final season in what has promised to be a "full-throttle farewell".
Michelle Keegan will of course be reprising her role as fan-favourite character Erin Croft, while other returning cast members include co-creator Joe Gilgun, as well as Ryan Sampson, Aaron Heffernan, Parth Thakerar, Joanna Higson, Steve Evets and Bhavna Limbachia.
"The series is a huge hit, but Joe Gilgun [co-creator] and myself always said we wanted to leave the party while it was still fun, even if saying goodbye is tough," fellow creator and writer Danny Brocklehurst previously said as part of a statement, after Brassic was announced to be ending.
Slow Horses, season 5
Apple TV's hit spy series, which centres on a dysfunctional team of demoted M15 agents, will be back for its fifth season on 24 September, premiering with two new episodes before dropping the rest once a week.
Based on London Rules, the fifth in Mick Herron's novel series, the season five synopsis reads: "Everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected…
"After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, the London Rules – cover your back – always apply."
The Girlfriend
With Slow Horses star Olivia Cooke and Robin Wright, The Girlfriend has been described as a "gripping and twisted psychological thriller" that explores the "complicated dynamic" between a mother and her son's new girlfriend.
The synopsis teases that Laura’s (Wright) "seemingly perfect life is blown apart" when her only son Daniel (Laurie Davidson) "brings home Cherry (Cooke), the girlfriend who changes everything…"
Based on Michelle Frances's novel of the same name, Prime Video's new original series will drop on 10 September.
