Hostage spoilers follow.

Hostage may have enraptured viewers since its release last week, but is Netflix planning a second season of the political thriller?

The series sees Suranne Jones portray Abigail Dalton, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. As she attends a summit with French president Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy), her life is turned upside down when her husband Alex (Ashley Thomas) is kidnapped.

The final episode of the five-part thriller ends on a cliffhanger-of-sorts as Abigail calls a surprise general election, leading fans to wonder if a follow-up could be on the cards in the future.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, writer-creator Matt Charman shared that they would be open to the prospect of a continuation, saying: "I would love to tell more of this story, partly because I love writing for Suranne.

"But I also think there’s something really exciting about who she might go up against next. What her next opposite number might be, you know? If we were lucky enough, I’d love to take this story on."

Naturally, given the title of the series, bringing in another hostage situation for the same characters could perhaps strain the boundaries of believability, though Charman explained that the title has many connotations.

"[It] means different things. When I think about the show, I don’t really think about Alex, I think more about the two leaders," they said. "They’re the hostages – they’re the ones being held and they’re the ones that are being blackmailed."

"So, it’s really about riffing on that word 'hostage', what does it mean to be under someone else’s control? So I think that’s where I would kind of explore further," they continued.

While a second season is yet to be greenlit by Netflix, the series has proved to be an enormous success with viewers, with the thriller reaching the top of the streamer's television chart just days after its release.

Hostage is streaming now on Netflix.
