Netflix's new thriller Hostage has become a big hit just days after its release.

The political series features Vigil's Suranne Jones as a fictional British Prime Minister whose husband is kidnapped at the same time the French President (Julie Delpy) is visiting.

Following its release yesterday (21 August), Hostage has shot straight to the top of the UK Top 10 series, beating the likes of Love Is Blind: UK and Wednesday.

The five-part series has also proved largely popular with critics, sitting at an 82% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 reviews.

The Irish Independent suggested that its "very ridiculousness is what makes it so ridiculously entertaining", while iNews praised its "gob smacking cliffhangers, shocking reveals and a smattering of red herrings to discuss with colleagues the next day".

The Guardian called the series "a rollicking, propulsive and compulsive yarn that also manages to give two great parts to two women of a certain age then leaves them to get on with it as characters rather than symbols".

Hostage comes from Bridge of Spies' Matt Charman, and speaking recently to Digital Spy, Delpy praised Jones's work with him.

"It was very inspiring to see an actor who decides to [partner with a writer and do a series] about a subject matter like this," she said.

"It's pretty ballsy to take two women and to not make it the typical 'woman president facing all the men.' It's a different energy in this show and I think [Suranne] drives that in a beautiful way."

Jones added of her co-star: "I just love working with actors that have been doing it for so long. Firstly, she's got the most amazing stories - a lot unrepeatable - but I just love hearing the tales of [her] life, someone like Julie, who has been and done it.

"She's also a writer and a director. I just love being around, particularly women, that are doing it and being brilliant and creative."

Hostage is streaming on Netflix now.
