Record-breaking thriller The Couple Next Door is set to return with a brand-new season on Channel 4 – and we have the lowdown on everything you need to know.

The series, which was described as "claustrophobic" by the broadcaster, debuted on the channel back in 2023.

Starring Poldark's Eleanor Tomlinson, Outlander's Sam Heughan, How to Get Away with Murder's Alfred Enoch and Arrow's Jessica De Gouw, the first season follows a married pair who move next door to another couple, before a night of passion changes everything.

The twisty thriller is based on Dutch show Nieuwe Buren, and proved a big ratings hit for Channel 4, who said it was the broadcaster's "biggest scripted streaming launch" ever, with the first episode achieving over 1 million streams in its first week.

Digital Spy called it a "bit Desperate Housewives – although perhaps not enough in the ways we would want – but it's nice enough" in our verdict.

What to Read Next

In the wake of its success, the broadcaster confirmed last year that a second season was on the way, which will focus on a new group of characters and storylines. However, there will be some continuity as Hugh Dennis will be returning as season 1's creepy neighbour Alan.

Channel 4 has teased that the new episodes "will see viewers venture back into the claustrophobic world of the cul-de-sac and explore the fallout of taking your fantasies and making them reality".

Director David Allison and writer Dries Vos will be back in their roles behind-the-camera for season 2, with filming already completed in Belgium.

"We are looking forward to audiences returning to the street with a gripping new story, brilliant new characters with Sam [Palladio], Annabel [Scholey], Aggy [K Adams] and Sendhil [Ramamurthy] in our new lead roles and the return of the familiar face of Hugh Dennis as Alan," said Channel 4's Drama Commissioning Editor Sarah Stack.

"Viewers are certainly in for an explosive treat and if you loved series one, you won’t want to miss series two!"

Eagle Eye Drama executive producer Jo McGrath added: "More sexy shenanigans in suburbia this time with a provocative psychological twist, the addictive global hit thriller The Couple Next Door is back, with a new set of neighbours each hiding dark secrets of their own."

Suspect's McGrath is exec producer alongside Walter Iuzzolino (The Undateables), and Jennifer Burnet (Mystic) is producer, while the show is produced by Eagle Eye Drama (Patience) in association with Happy Duck Films (Professor T).

What will happen in The Couple Next Door season 2?

The Couple Next Door season 2 will focus on a new couple – "brilliant heart surgeon" Charlotte Roberts and husband Jacob, a consultant anaesthetist, who are described as "a high-flying busy" married pair.

"But things soon turn upside down when their mysterious new hospital colleague Mia rents out the house next door," the synopsis adds.

"Working her way into Charlotte and Jacob's confidence and eventually their bed, Mia also quickly befriends cul-de-sac outcast Alan whilst Charlotte has to handle the reappearance of past flame Leo.

"However, it's not long before Mia's past comes back to haunt her, leading Charlotte and Jacob to question who she really is, especially when patients at the hospital mysteriously start dying. But one thing is clear, giving into desires can have deadly consequences…."
