Ben Miller's beloved ITV detective series Professor T has announced an exciting update.

Ahead of the show's fourth season, which is due to air this year, the broadcaster has revealed that the series has been renewed for a fifth outing.

Based on the Belgian show of the same name, Professor T follows a genius criminologist with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) who helps police solve crimes.

ITV has promised that the fifth season will have "unexpected new relationships and more complex crimes for the Professor and police unit to tackle".

These include a "boxing match that takes a bloody turn" and "a series of inexplicable sudden deaths at an upmarket spa".

Fan-favourite characters are also expected to face tough choices, with the stakes high for Professor T and his team.

Alongside the tease, it has been confirmed that Shadow and Bone's Zoë Wanamaker has joined the cast as the professor's aunt Zelda Radclyffe, while Miller returns alongside Frances de la Tour, Juliet Stevenson, Barney White, Sunetra Sarker and Rhian Blundell.

The Professor T actor said he was "beyond thrilled" to be working on a fifth season, teasing that his character will be tackling "his most baffling case yet: romance".

"The fact that audiences worldwide have embraced the show so warmly is hugely rewarding, and we’re already brimming with ideas to make series 5 even more quirky, heartfelt, and surprising," Miller added. "Here’s to another season of baffling crime, dreaming spires, and ironing that tweed…."
