British crime series Patience is set to return with "brilliant new cases to crack" – and we have the lowdown on everything you need to know.

The Channel 4 series follows Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis), an autistic Yorkshire Police Criminal Records Officer who teams up with DI Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) to solve complex murders after the latter spots her unique solving skills.

The series is based on Franco-Belgian show Astrid et Raphaëlle – known as Astrid: Murder in Paris in the UK – which also follows an autistic woman who teams up with a policewoman to solve cases.

Patience comes from creator Matt Baker (Hotel Portofino), and debuted on the broadcaster earlier this year – breaking the record for the biggest Channel 4 drama of 2025 so far with an average of 4.2 million views.

It also gained a largely positive critical reception, with The Observer calling the series a "stand out", while The Daily Telegraph suggested it was "a worthwhile addition to the crime drama ranks".

What to Read Next

Hot off the heels of its success, an eight-episode second season was announced earlier in May, which will see Patience under a new boss, while also beginning a relationship with work colleague Elliot.

"The response and popularity of Series 1 was staggering, so I am beyond thrilled to dive back into the world of Patience for a Series 2, especially because we have some brilliant new cases to crack," Purvis said upon the announcement. "Buckle up!"

Jo McGrath, Chief Creative Officer at Eagle Eye Drama, added "We’re so proud of Patience’s success in the UK and the extended recommission is a real testament to the quality of our cast and talented crew, guided by our outstanding director Maarten Moerkerke.

"Series 2 promises to be even more action-packed, culminating with a nail-biting hostage storyline and a shocking family revelation for Patience."

Episodes for season 2 will be written by Amy Shindler (My Family), Beth Chalmers (Mystic), Rachel Smith (Father Brown) and Jacqui Honess-Martin (Maternal), and directed by season 1's Maarten Moerkerke alongside Raf Reyntjens (Marie Antoinette).

What will happen in Patience season 2?

A synopsis for season 2 teases that Patience will "continue her work in the police criminal records department of City of York Police after establishing herself as an invaluable member of the team, bringing her unique insight into a series of perplexing cases".

"However, when a new boss, Detective Frankie Monroe, brings a very different management style, it proves tricky for them both to navigate," it adds.

"Love is also in the air in this series as Patience begins a relationship with a work colleague, Elliot, and the police department gets a makeover with the arrival of a new PR consultant, all whilst tackling intriguing crimes in extraordinary settings such as York Minster."

Who is returning for Patience season 2?

As well as the return of Purvis, Miss Austen's Jessica Hynes is set to join the second season in the role of Detective Monroe.

Hynes said of her casting: "I am thrilled to be joining the cast of Patience as DI Frankie Monroe – I hugely enjoyed the first series as a viewer and looking forward to joining the team for the second series to be in the middle of the action."

It appears that Fraser won't be returning as Metcalf, however, as she isn't listed among season 2's cast.

A number of cast returns from season 1 have been confirmed, including:

• Tom Lewis (Gentleman Jack) as Elliot Scott
• Nathan Welsh (Trying) as DS Jake Hunter
• Mark Benton (Smoggie Queens) as Calvin Baxter
• Adrian Rawlins (Chernobyl) as Douglas Gilmore
• Ali Ariaie (Doctor Who) as DC Will Akbari
• Connor Curren (Dodger) as Billy Thompson
• Liza Sadovy (A Real Pain) as Dr Loretta Parsons

When will Patience season 2 be released?

A release date is yet to be confirmed, though filming on season 2 began earlier in May – so we could likely expect a 2026 premiere at the earliest.

Patience season 1 is available to stream now on Channel 4.
