Sara - Woman in the Shadows, the new Italian crime drama, has topped Netflix's streaming chart following its release.

The six-part series follows a secret agent who reconnects with her former team following the "suspicious" death of her son, with her past "hurtling back" as the group investigates an increasingly "sinister" slew of crimes.

Starring Teresa Saponangelo, Claudia Gerini and Flavio Furno, the show has proved to be a major success after being added to Netflix on Tuesday (3 June), with the crime drama topping the streamer's daily global charts for most-viewed series at the time of writing (via FlixPatrol).

Based on the works of novelist Maurizio De Giovanni, the "gripping" Sara - Woman in the Shadows explores the "emotional and criminal underbelly" of Naples, with Netflix Junkie labelling it a "compelling" series filled with "tension, sorrow and slow-burning suspense".

The series has currently garnered mixed reviews from audiences, with IMDb reporting an average score of 6.1 from 214 reviews at the time of writing. Good Housekeeping was positive, however, calling it "gut-wrenching" and "the ultimate emotional rollercoaster".

While Sara - Woman in the Shadows is currently sitting pretty at the top of Netflix's television charts, the streamer's film list is also headed by an international project, with Spanish crime drama A Widow's Game currently at #1.

The film, which features Ivana Baquero and Tristán Ulloa, tells the real-life story of a 2017 stabbing that took place in Valencia, with the narrative documenting the investigation that "shattered" the victim's widow's "perfect façade" following the exposure of a "hidden double life".

Directed by Carlos Sedes, A Widow's Game has received mixed reviews from critics amid its popularity with viewers, with the film currently possessing an approval rating of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes from 10 reviews.

Collider described the film as an "underwhelming whodunnit" that "doesn't really hit the mark," while Decider dubbed it a "professionally executed, slightly-better-than-middling crime drama" with a "thin" screenplay.
