New thriller A Widow's Game has topped the Netflix streaming charts worldwide, becoming the streamer's most-watched film globally since its release on 30 May.

Based on real-life events, the film tells the story of the 2017 murder of Antonio Navarro Cerdán, who was stabbed to death in Valencia, Spain.

The high-profile case made headlines when Cerdán's widow Maje became the primary suspect in the murder and her secret life was exposed.

The synopsis reads: "When a man is found dead, the investigation shatters his widow's perfect facade and exposes a hidden double life in this thriller based on real events."

Directed by Carlos Sedes, the Spanish film stars Pan's Labyrinth actor Ivana Baquero in the lead role as Maje alongside Carmen Machi, Tristán Ulloa, Pablo Molinero, Pepe Ocio and Álex Gadea.

The dramatisation offers a look at the story from the perspective of three different people including Maje, her lover Salvo, and the police.

In their review of the film, Collider described A Widow's Game as an "underwhelming whodunnit" which "sets out to be an intriguing portrayal of a high-profile case but doesn't really hit the mark."

This hasn't stopped viewers from giving the movie a chance as it is currently ranked as Netflix's most watched movie right now, sitting at the number one spot on the streaming service's top ten movies in the UK chart.

According to FlixPatrol, A Widow's Game is also ranked in first place as the most-watched film on Netflix globally at the time of writing.

Critic reviews of the movie have been varied, with many praising the lead performances. Decider said of the movie: "A Widow’s Game is a slightly-better-than-middling drama, professionally executed from a technical standpoint but a bit thin of screenplay."

Leisure Byte penned: "Netflix's A Widow's Game is fine, but lacks the thrill of the investigation. However, the performances make up for it."

A Widow's Game is streaming on Netflix.
