Netflix has announced a new series based on a best-selling book, with Rachel Weisz set to star and executive produce.

The streaming service giant will turn Julia May Jonas' novel Vladimir into an eight-part limited series, with The Mummy and Black Widow star Weisz at the helm.

Vladimir follows a woman who becomes obsessed with her "captivating" new colleague as her life starts to unravel around her. As time goes on, she becomes more and more intent on turning her fantasies into reality.

Dead to Me's Kate Robin will write the series alongside Jonas, with Bad Sisters' Sharon Horgan serving as producer alongside Stacy Greenberg, Kira Carstensen, Jason Winer and Jon Radler.

Horgan said: "I fell in love with Julia's writing from the very first paragraph. I feel very lucky and incredibly excited for [production company] Merman to bring Vladimir to life alongside [Winter's company] Small Dog.

Netflix's vice president of comedy series, Tracey Pakosta, added: "With Kate Robin's expertise in crafting layered, darkly comedic female stories, a script that deftly examines the complexity of attraction and moral ambiguities, and the incomparable Rachel Weisz leading the cast, this project is a powerhouse collaboration of talented women.

"We can't wait for our fans to be as obsessed with Vladimir as we are."

Meanwhile, Netflix has renewed the comedy Running Point just one week after it premiered. The show is co-created by Mindy Kaling and stars Kate Hudson as a former party girl who has to take over her family's professional basketball team.

Vladimir does not currently have a release window, but will release exclusively on Netflix. The book is available to buy from retailers such as Amazon.
