EastEnders star Charlie Brooks has unveiled a hair transformation, in a change from her blonde hairstyle.

The actress, who played Janine Butcher on the BBC soap, has revamped her style by dying her hair dark brown, adding in a full fringe in the process.

"Change is happening. Change is good," Brooks wrote on Instagram, in a post that showed off her new look.

Former EastEnders co-stars Emma Barton and Natalie Cassidy commented on Charlie's post, with the former writing: "Love." Natalie, who plays Sonia Fowler, commented: "Beautiful."

Charlie, who took over the role of Janine in 1999 when the character was reintroduced to EastEnders, left the soap for the third time at the end of last year, with her final scenes airing during a dramatic storyline on Boxing Day when Janine was taken away for police questioning.

Explaining her exit, Charlie said she'd had an amazing time on the show, and didn't rule out another return to Albert Square in the future.

"I was only ever due back to EastEnders for a year, but when [executive producer] Chris Clenshaw presented me with his idea for the story, I couldn't say no to staying a little longer," she said.

"I've had an amazing time, as I always do when I go back. But as always with Janine, she probably should not outstay her welcome – for everyone's sake.

"I've had the best year and a half getting back into Janine's shoes. She's so fun to play, but I also love playing all the vulnerable stuff with Janine as well," she continued.

"I'm an actress, so I want to do everything. But, yeah, it is hard. I also feel like if she was to stay in the show, the character might not be as strong somehow.

"But I always say: 'Never say never'. EastEnders is home to me, and I've had a fantastic time, so I'd be open to a return for sure," she concluded.

Charlie is now appearing on stage, after being cast as Ursula in the National Theatre's touring production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
