EastEnders star Charlie Brooks has landed a brand new stage role.

The actress is due to exit as Janine Butcher around the New Year, 18 months after she made her comeback on Albert Square.

It has now been confirmed that Charlie will appear in the National Theatre's touring production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, taking on the role of Ursula.

The EastEnders star confirmed her exit from the soap last month, telling The Sun on Sunday: "I was only ever due back to EastEnders for a year, but when [executive producer] Chris Clenshaw presented me with his idea for the story, I couldn't say no to staying a little longer.

"I've had an amazing time, as I always do when I go back. But as always with Janine, she probably should not outstay her welcome – for everyone's sake."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
