Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's upcoming Netflix crime thriller The Rip has been delayed until 2026.

Described as a "gripping crime thriller", the film sees long-time friends Affleck and Damon team up to play a pair of Miami cops who discover millions of dollars worth of cash in a derelict stash house.

After outside forces learn of the sizeable sum of cash that was seized, the team's trust in each other begins to fray and who they rely on is called into question.

Originally slated for release sometime this autumn, the film's release date has been pushed back and it will now premiere on the streaming service on January 16, 2025.

Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip also stars Steven Yeun, Nésto Carbonell, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, Sasha Calle, Kyle Chandler and Lina Esco.

Speaking about the movie, Carnahan told Tudum it was inspired by true events, saying: "The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department."

On what else inspired the movie, Carnahan said he was influenced by his "enduring love" for cop thrillers from the 1970s.

"It's inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70's cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann's Heat."

Meanwhile, the director opened up about what it was like to work with Affleck and Damon, who produced the movie alongside Luciana Damon and Dani Bernfeld for their company Artists Equity.

"Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds," Carnahan said. "I've never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way."

The Rip will release globally on Netflix on January 16, 2026.
