The Secret Agent, the "suspenseful" spy drama starring Toby Jones and Vicky McClure, is currently streaming in the UK on Netflix, but you'll have to hurry as it is due to be removed from the service.
The drama series, which originally aired in three parts on BBC One in 2016, is based on Joseph Conrad's 1907 novel of the same name, and takes place in Victorian-era London in the 1880s.
The story follows Anton Verloc, a shopkeeper based in Soho who becomes a spy for the Russian embassy. Naturally, with national interests on the line, Anton's world becomes fraught with danger.

Featuring McClure as on-screen wife Winnie and Stephen Graham as Chief Inspector Heat, all four episodes (they've been shortened here) are currently available to watch on Netflix, but the series has been tagged with 'Leaving Soon' on there, with 19 June the last day to watch.
Written by Tony Marchant and directed by Charles McDougall, the series, which has been dubbed "suspenseful" by the streamer, boasts a stacked supporting cast including Charlie Hamblett, Ian Hart, David Dawson, George Costigan and Tom Goodman-Hill.

Upon its release, The Secret Agent received a generally positive response from viewers, with IMDb currently reporting a solid user rating of 6.1/10 from 1300 logs. In a 7/10 review, one user praised the period details.
"The music really adds to the feel of it all, as does the great location scenes. I thought it well acted and produced, it leaves you wanting more," they wrote, calling it "enjoyable" while noting the "really dark twists".

"In essence it's more of a satirical perspective on state and anarchy rather than a tale of international espionage," wrote another user in a 7/10 review, before they added that it was "slow and complex".
Another user echoed this sentiment as they praised the performances and costume design, noting: "This is an interesting period mini-season drama... The plot kept me involved, but the story is not so much a spy thriller, but more of a character study."
