Gary Lineker has been confirmed for a brand new ITV show, following his exit from the BBC.

The former Match of the Day presenter will front The Box, a new gameshow featuring celebrity contestants.

Based on a Norwegian format that premiered earlier this year, The Box will see celebs housed in 10 yellow boxes that open up to reveal surprise games and challenges that they'll quickly have to get their heads around in order to overcome.

Each episode will end a duel that will see one contestant removed from the competition for good.

Filming is set to take place later this year to air on ITV in 2026.

"I can't wait to host The Box," Gary said. "I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar.

"The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control.

"It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front-row seat to all the action!"

Katie Rawcliffe, ITV's Director of Entertainment, Reality & Daytime Commissioning, called Gary "the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format".

Dan Adamson, CCO of production company Twofour, added that the host is "sure to raise the competitive spirit as our cast bursts out of those boxes, into unknown, ambitious and spectacular challenges".

Back in May, Gary announced that he was leaving the BBC, following a controversy over a shared Instagram story.

He had already stepped down from fronting Match of the Day – with Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan taking over from the 2025-26 season – and said in a message before his final episode that it was "the right time for the organisation and myself to go our separate ways".

The Box will air on ITV and stream on ITVX next year.
