Her current partner George is sympathetic when Christina explains that it's a serious spending addiction and she needs support rather than condemnation.

"We've all seen Mary's mood swings in the past – she may be sweet and quirky, but she's not someone to get on the wrong side of!"

Christina tries to protest as Mary flogs various household items which don't belong to her. However, Mary bites back by pointing out they were bought on her card, so they must be hers to sell.

"Christina wasn't being malicious in getting her loved ones caught up in fraud and spending sprees," continues our insider. "She's been trying her best to pay the money back herself, but Mary is so angry that there's just no reasoning with her."

The next day, Mary still refuses to let it go as she makes more jibes at Christina about what she's been up to.

It seems that Christina is struggling badly with her addiction, as she discreetly looks at a phone message which reads: "Package out for delivery". Will George find out that she's continuing to spend heavily?

"Part of the reason she got herself in trouble is because she's the one who always gets the drinks in," Amy Robbins, who plays Christina, recently told us.

"If someone who I considered a friend took out a credit card in my name, I’d find that very hard to forgive – until I saw how truly sorry they were and accepted they had a problem.

"Spending is an addiction like any other, like gambling or alcohol, and this storyline is taking it seriously. It's so easy to get into debt."

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
