Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar has said what we've all been waiting to hear about the return of the BBC show.

The hugely popular BBC police drama seemingly came to an end in 2021 after six seasons, though recent rumblings have suggested that a seventh season may be on the way.

Addressing rumours of a seventh season, Dunbar, who played Superintendent Ted Hastings, seemed to confirm that a new season was on the way.

Speaking to The Times, Dunbar said that he and his Line of Duty co-stars are ready to return to filming next year, though the BBC is yet to confirm the news or make an official announcement.

He said: "We’re really excited about getting our hands on a Line of Duty script, to see what happens to us. Jed [Mercurio] is writing. We’ve talked to the BBC.

"It is down to the BBC to make an announcement, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that next year we’ll be working on a new series. No doubt Jed will think of some interesting twists and turns."

Earlier this month, Dunbar dropped another hint that the series is returning, telling BBC Radio Ulster: "We're all keeping our fingers crossed, just waiting on the BBC to make an announcement.

"I know Jed's working away," he said. "And I know me and Vicky [McClure] and Martin [Compston] really want to do it. So hopefully next year we'll be back in Belfast and rattling around the town making a nuisance of ourselves."

He added: "The wheels are turning on that. It's just down to the BBC to make an announcement."

Meanwhile, his co-star Compston, who played Steve Arnott, also dropped a hint about the show's return during an appearance on Nicky Byrne HQ.

Asked if he would be appearing in Soccer Aid next year, Compston teased: "I think, already, I know I'm filming next year. This will be a pretty good one this next show."

Line of Duty streams on BBC iPlayer.
