Netflix's new murder mystery show Untamed has proved hugely popular since its release last week, shooting up the streamer's charts to the number 1 spot.

The limited series follows a National Park Service Investigative Services Branch investigator (Eric Bana) who – alongside his mentor (Sam Neill) – looks into the death of a woman whose body is found at Yosemite National Park.

If you've already binged through all six episodes, there are plenty more shows of that ilk available to watch on Netflix and other streamers – and we've rounded up seven of the best that you should definitely check out.

The Forest

Also clocking in at six episodes, this 2017 crime drama follows the disappearance of a teenage girl in a forest in Belgium's Ardennes region, with police investigating with the help of her teacher – who had a traumatic experience herself in the same place when she was young.

The Forest largely drew positive reviews, with Decider saying there is "more than enough intrigue – and fine performances – to keep us watching", while the Irish Independent said that a "good cast of unfamiliar players helps to make this series an unpublicised little gem".

The show comes from Delinda Jacobs, and stars Samuel Labarthe, Suzanne Clément, Alexia Barlier, Frédéric Diefenthal and Patrick Ridremont.

The Woods

Based on Harlan Coben's book of the same name and created by the author, this 2020 Polish series takes place over the course of two timelines.

Focusing on prosecutor Paweł Kopiński (Grzegorz Damięcki), the story sees the character tasked with identifying a body found with newspaper clippings, with the murder appearing to link to a summer camp in 1994 where he was a chaperone. At the time, two people were killed and another two disappeared.

The Woods was one of the first Coben adaptations on Netflix – with the streamer since having huge hits with the likes of Fool Me Once and Missing You. However, the Polish series is pretty highly-rated, sitting at an 89% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trapped

This mystery is set in a remote Icelandic town as a body washes up ashore following a treacherous blizzard. This leads police to investigate a murder, with everyone trapped in the area becoming potential suspects.

Starring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, the show has run for three seasons – with the third, also known as Entrapped, available to stream on Netflix.

The series has also drawn acclaim, with the first season standing at a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Guardian calling the show "seductive, involving, gripping", while The Hollywood Reporter suggested it "transcends Nordic Noir cliche with some uniquely Icelandic touches".

Seasons 1 and 2 available on Prime Video via Viaplay, while season 3 is available to watch on Netflix.

The Breakthrough

Released earlier this year, this Swedish series is based on the true story of two murders in 2004, which sparked a huge investigation but remained a cold case for 16 years. That was until a new breakthrough in genealogical research.

The show is inspired by non-fiction book The Breakthrough: How The Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund, though is described as "a fictional story" about "the unexpected hero, an unlikely collaboration, and the hunt for a killer".

"But it is also a story about how an unsolved crime affects a society and what happens to people who are left without answers to both 'Who?' and 'Why?'," the synopsis adds.

Dept Q

One of this year's unexpected Netflix hits, Dept Q is still sitting in the streamer's Top 10 nearly two months after its release.

The Scotland-set series is based on the Danish Nordic noir novels of the same name by Jussi Adler-Olsen, and focuses on DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) as he returns to work after a traumatic incident and is tasked with starting a new cold case unit.

Also starring Chloe Pirrie, Kelly Macdonald, Jamie Sives and Kate Dickie, Dept Q has been a critical hit as well as a viewing success, sitting at an impressive 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, Digital Spy calling it "a largely entertaining watch".

The Jetty

Jenna Coleman stars in this BBC crime drama, which was released last year and follows a detective who looks into a fire at a Lancashire holiday home, finding connections between it, a missing persons cold case, and a man involved with two underage girls.

Created and written by Cat Jones, the show also features House of the Dragon's Tom Glynn-Carney, Bridgerton's Ruby Stokes and upcoming The Legend of Zelda star Bo Bragason.

Digital Spy said that "when it's lobbing plot at you, The Jetty is tense and watchable" in our review, while the Evening Standard called it a "complex series" that Coleman carries "beautifully".

Mare of Easttown

Released in 2021, Kate Winslet won huge acclaim (including an Emmy) for her turn as a detective investigating the murder of a teenage mother in a fictional Philadelphia suburb, all while trying to balance her personal life. Despite being a local hero, her struggles to crack another case also have some doubting her talents.

Boasting a near-perfect 95% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, Mare of Easttown won huge acclaim when it was released, The Guardian calling it a "wonderful" series that "becomes a show greater than the sum of its already considerable parts".

Alongside Winslet, the series boasts an impressive wider cast too, including Hacks' Jean Smart, Mean Girls' Angourie Rice, American Horror Story's Evan Peters and The Brutalist's Guy Pearce.

Available to watch on Sky and NOW, and buy on Prime Video.
