An Australian crime drama starring Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt has jumped up the most-streamed content on Netflix.

Added to the streamer last week, the series was originally acquired by ITV after its Australian release in 2023, sparking comparisons to beloved murder mystery Broadchurch.

Comprised of six episodes, North Shore is set on and around Sydney Harbour. It sees a British and an Aussie detective team up to solve a complex murder case that ties in with a bigger political picture.

Alongside Froggatt, the series stars John Bradley West (Game of Thrones), Kirsty Sturgess (Thirteen Lives), Matt Passmore (Last Man Standing), Cassandra Sorrell and Dan Spielman.

Viewers have been divided in their reactions on IMDb, with some praising the acting and the central performances in what they describe as a "slow-paced" drama.

"Likeable main actors and a few complex characters make this an easy to watch drama that otherwise is pretty mediocre," one person noted.

Another viewer hailed the show as a "pleasant surprise", crediting North Shore's watchability factor to "the two leads who carry it".

While one person sounded less than impressed with the series and called it a "by-the-numbers" murder mystery, someone else urged fellow viewers to pull through and get to the final episode, where the crime drama delivers a satisfying twist.

"I'm sorry for those who gave this low scores and gave up on it before the last episode!" they wrote.

"Because the final episode has the most surprising twist of any crime/ murder mystery series since the first season of Broadchurch! Not as emotionally dramatic but still shocking!"

Audience reviews are mixed on Rotten Tomatoes, too - ranging from half a star to the full five stars on the site. The former entry said the programme was "really not getting any better" after episode two, while the latter hailed the "great character-driven show" that "keeps you guessing".

In other news, Joanne Froggatt has promised that Downton Abbey 3 will give fans a satisfying finale to the series. The sequel, titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, is due to be released in cinemas on 12 September.

North Shore is streaming on Netflix in the UK.
