Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones has confirmed her shock split from David Peet after 26 years.

The Nessa actor and Peet, a film producer, tied the knot back in 1999, but separated a year and a half ago. The former couple confirmed the break-up in a joint statement.

"We amicably went our separate ways 18 months ago and are now legally separated," she told PA News Agency. "We remain good friends. Since our separation Ruth is living in London and David is living in Canada, where he is in a new relationship."

The couple met on set while filming a pilot episode for a BBC comedy, with Jones becoming stepmother to Peet’s three children from a previous relationship.

In 2008, the pair founded production company Tidy Productions and went on to co-create Sky comedy series Stella, with Jones playing the titular character for six seasons.

Jones has been in demand professionally since Gavin and Stacey: The Finale aired last Christmas, drawing in an audience of 12.3 million viewers.

She was most recently on screen in Ruth and Steve: From Merthyr with Love, an hour-long special where she teamed up with close friend Steve Speirs to celebrate the "rich history" of Welsh town Merthyr Tydfil.

In February, the actor was spotted filming scenes for upcoming Harlan Coben Netflix show Run Away, which also stars James Nesbitt, Minnie Driver, Alfred Enoch and Jon Pointing.

Just this month, Jones was also announced as joining the cast of a new BBC period drama.

The Other Bennet Sister, featuring characters from the world of Jane Austen, is an upcoming 10-part series based on Janice Hadlow's 2020 book of the same name. The series will see Mary Bennet as the protagonist, who will go on a voyage of self-discovery.

Jones will pair up with Richard E Grant to portray the famous Mrs and Mr Bennet from
Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, with actor Ella Bruccoleri playing Mary.

All season of Gavin and Stacey are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
