Gavin & Stacey star Alison Steadman has shared that she is “lucky to be alive” after suffering a “serious” fall.

The actor, who played Pam Shipman on the beloved BBC sitcom, told the Daily Star that the incident occurred during a holiday in Dubai back in January, with the star currently using a wheelchair after fracturing her foot.

“I knew when I fell that it was serious - the pain was so bad,” she recalled. “If I’d banged my head the way I banged my foot, I promise you, I would not be here. Every time I get fed up, I say to myself: ‘the important thing is that I’m alive.’

“I’ve been in a wheelchair for eight weeks. I am getting a bit frustrated. I want to get out and about more. But it means I can get around my flat [and] move around. Otherwise I’d be in bed or sitting in a chair and I don’t want that."

Steadman, who recently starred in Better Man, continued by sharing that her leg would be in a boot for the six weeks after spending the same amount of time with a cast, with the next stage of her recovery enabling her to walk on crutches.

“Then I’ve got to have another operation to take the metal plates and the screws out of my foot,” she continued. “I hope I’ll be back on my feet soon. In a month’s time hopefully I will be up walking on crutches.”

Whilst Steadman is currently recuperating, the actor recently made her final appearance as Pam in Gavin & Stacey, with the sitcom concluding over the festive season with a special, one-off episode.

“It was really emotional. We had the best time - it was lovely. We all really enjoyed it,” said Steadman of the finale. “Being back in Barry, everyone's so warm and friendly - it was lovely.

“But of course, when we finally wrapped, it was really sad because we thought, ‘Ooh, we won't be together again’. We were all really emotional.”

Gavin & Stacey is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
