New Sean Bean crime drama This City Is Ours has finally confirmed a release date.

The anticipated new Liverpool-set show centres on a man involved in organised crime called Michael Kavanagh (James Nelson-Joyce) who begins to imagine another life.

After a first look at the project earlier this year, it has now been revealed that the series will premiere on Sunday, March 23 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer (via Radio Times).

The show comes from The Last Kingdom’s Stephen Butchard, and focuses on Michael, who has been involved in organised crime his whole life and works under gang leader and friend Ronnie Phelan (Bean).

However, “when Ronnie begins to hint at retirement, Michael too begins to imagine another life”.

“Because, for the first time in his life, Michael is in love. For the first time in his life, he sees beyond the day-to-day, he sees a future: something to win and something to lose – Diana,” the synopsis adds.

The show will follow Michael and Diana's love affair, which happens against the disintegration of Michael's crime gang, and will also focus on Ronnie’s son Jamie, who wants to inherit the kingdom as he battles with Michael for control.

“This is a story about family, and love destroyed and corrupted by ambition, pride and greed,” the synopsis adds. “It’s a story about power: what we will do to secure and keep it.”

Empire of Light's Hannah Onslow will take on the role of love interest Diana Williams, while the series also stars Derry Girls' Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Gavin & Stacey's Laura Aikman, Hijack's Jack McMullen and Time's Kevin Harvey.

Speaking previously about the project, Nelson-Joyce said: “It's an absolute honour to be a part of this exciting show. I knew from reading the first episode that I had to take on this compelling story of crime, loyalty and above all, love.”

This City Is Ours will premiere on Sunday, March 23 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
