This City Is Ours, described by the BBC as its "epic new crime drama", has been given a first look.

The show's ensemble cast includes Sean Bean (whose recent Disney period drama Shardlake has just been cancelled after one season), James Nelson-Joyce (ITV's Little Boy Blue), Hannah Onslow (This Is Going to Hurt) and Julie Graham (Shetland, Time).

Filmed and set in Liverpool, This City Is Ours centres on the story of a man named Michael Kavanagh (played by Nelson-Joyce), who has been involved in organised crime for all of his adult life and works for his friend and gang leader Ronnie Phelan (Bean).

The synopsis reveals: "When Ronnie begins to hint at retirement, Michael too begins to imagine another life. Because, for the first time in his life, Michael is in love. For the first time in his life, he sees beyond the day-to-day, he sees a future: something to win and something to lose..."

What to Read Next

Michael's love interest Diana Williams will be played by Onslow, and This City Is Ours will explore their relationship against the backdrop of the disintegration of Michael's crime gang.

Previously announced cast members also include Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls), Laura Aikman (Gavin & Stacey), Mike Noble (The Long Shadow), Bobby Schofield (SAS Rogue Heroes, The Suspect), Kevin Harvey (Time) and Stephen Walters (Slow Horses).

This City Is Ours has been created by Stephen Butchard (The Last Kingdom, Five Daughters) and the producer, Simon Maloney, has credits that include Peaky Blinders and I May Destroy You.

The 8-part BBC series will be directed by the BAFTA award-winning Saul Dibb (The Salisbury Poisonings, The Sixth Commandment), John Hayes (Dublin Murders) and Eshref Reybrouck (Undercover).

This City Is Ours is coming soon to BBC iPlayer and will air on BBC One in the Spring.
