Sean Bean's period drama Shardlake has been cancelled after just one season.
Based on C J Sansom's novels, the four-part Tudor mystery followed sheltered lawyer Matthew Shardlake (played by Arthur Hughes), who is instructed by Thomas Cromwell (played by Bean) to investigate the murder of a commissioner in a remote town.
"Cromwell insists that he is accompanied by Jack Barak (played by Anthony Boyle), where the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order," read the synopsis.

The Disney+ series premiered in May 2024 but will not be returning for a second season, according to Variety.
"We'd like to thank Stephen Butchard who adapted the late C J Sansom's beloved novel for the screen, the entire cast – led by the outstanding Arthur Hughes – and crew, and our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge," said a Disney+ representative. "We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future."

In its three-star review, Digital Spy called the Tudor series "too slow off the mark", adding: "It isn't until the second episode that we rev into some action, and when there are only four in total, it's a hefty chunk of table-setting."
Meanwhile, Shardlake isn't the only UK show to be axed by the streaming service. Comedy series Extraordinary will also not receive another season.
The show, which followed two chaotic flatmates living in a world of superpowers, aired for two seasons. Its cancellation means the award-winning series has ended on a big cliffhanger.
