Protection, a new ITV crime drama, has released a first look, with its lead cast Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley) and Katherine Kelly (Mr Bates vs. The Post Office, The Crow Girl) front and centre.

The six-part thriller will centre around what happens when the witness protection system breaks down. It has been created by Kris Mrksa, the writer of ITV's critically-acclaimed crime dramatisation White House Farm.

Protection's cast also boasts Nadine Marshall (Sherwood, Trigger Point), Barry Ward (Bad Sisters, Save Me) and Chaneil Kular (Sex Education).

Finneran will play Detective Inspector Liz Nyles, who finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit. She also has a number of personal things happening in her life; as a single mum, she's juggling parenting while also navigating a divorce and caring for her sick father.

The synopsis adds: "Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police. Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules."

The description goes on to say that she will be "pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems..."

ITV has said that the series has been inspired by a real-life witness protection officer, who also acted as a consultant for the drama. Protection has been produced by the multi-award-winning team who were also behind hits such as Des (which starred David Tennant, Daniel Mays and Jason Watkins) and The Long Shadow.

Protection is set to premiere on ITV in the spring, and the series will also be available to stream on ITVX.
