A new guide dog puppy is to join the menagerie of Blue Peter pets.

The CBBC show will introduce viewers to the 2-month-old trainee guide dog next Thursday, as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first ever guide dog puppy appeal.

The programme will then follow its progress over the coming year as presenter Lindsey Russell will help to train the puppy as it undergoes a comprehensive course to become a fully qualified guide dog.

The pet follows in the footsteps of Honey, who was the first Blue Peter guide dog to join the team in 1964.

Blue Peter editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: "It's great to be able to revisit a classic moment from Blue Peter's history but bring it right up to date to make it relevant to our current audience. We're looking forward to welcoming the new puppy into the team."

Guide Dogs chief executive Richard Leaman added: "It is such a great honour to be working alongside the Blue Peter team again, we're incredibly proud of every one of our life-changing guide dogs.
