Crookhaven, the "brilliantly twisty" BBC mystery drama starring Dougray Scott and Julie Hesmondhalgh, has gotten an exciting update. If you were nervous about the series' future, then fret not, as it is set to come back!

As per Deadline, the popular mystery drama will return for a second season, with filming set to commence in Northern Ireland this summer ahead of a proposed release date next year.

"I'm delighted to be returning to Crookhaven and stepping back into the role of the Caspian Lockett," said Scott, who praised the "talented cast and creative team" as well as the "wonderful, mysterious world".

Lucas Leach, who plays lead character Gabriel Avery, said the story is "only getting better" with the second season, while Penelope Lockett actor Carmel Laniado said they couldn't wait for audiences to see their character's "brave journey of self-discovery".

"Crookhaven struck a real chord with audiences through its originality, ambition and brilliantly twisty storytelling," said Sarah Muller, Senior Head of BBC Children’s Commissioning 7+.

"Bringing it back for a second [season] allows us to go even deeper into this rich, morally complex story and raise the stakes for the students of Crookhaven as they return for another unpredictable year."

Cecilia Persson, Managing Director of BBC Studios Kids & Family, added: "We're delighted to be able to expand the world further with a second [season], allowing us to deepen those connections, raise the stakes and bring even more viewers along for the journey."

Crookhaven is based on JJ Arcanjo's book series, and sees Vigil star Scott portray Caspian Lockett. He is the headmaster of the titular school, an institution which aims to harness the abilities of skilled crooks by teaching them to use their talent for good.

The first season, which premiered in March, followed a group of students as they battled it out for the "infamous" Crooked Cup, all while facing the threat of a terrifying enemy called The Nameless.

In addition Scott and Hesmondhalgh, the latter of whom portrays Grandma Sue, the cast for the BBC series also includes Keith Allen, Leila Khan, Charlie Mann, Claire Forlani and Arthur Darvill.

Crookhaven airs on BBC One and CBBC, while also streaming on BBC iPlayer.
