Emmerdale stars explain why Nicky rejects Gabby next week

Emmerdale stars Rosie Bentham and Lewis Cope have hinted that there could still be a romantic future for their characters Gabby Thomas and Nicky the nanny.

Show bosses had hinted at a relationship for the pair when Nicky was first introduced last month, but some recently-released spoilers cast doubt on the potential match.

Sneak peeks at next week's episodes have revealed that Nicky will reject Gabby when she moves in for a kiss during a cosy moment at Home Farm.

The awkward moment comes as Gabby celebrates being hired as Kim Tate's deputy and invites Nicky to join her for a bottle of champagne.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, Rosie explained: "I think Gabby is just really excited. She sees her life going one way – upwards.

"When Nicky rejects her, it leaves Gabby really confused, because there have been very clear signals from Nicky. He has been egging it on and they've been flirting. Then Gabby finally just goes, 'Look, cool, this is what I'm going to do'. She leans in for a kiss and is rejected.

"Obviously, Gabby has been rejected many times before, so she's like: 'Here we go again!' And also, it's someone who's going to be around her all the time, so she's embarrassed and mortified by the whole thing.

"They're also drunk, so the next morning she wakes up hungover and Nicky avoids Gabby."

Explaining Nicky's perspective, Lewis shared: "I think they both get carried away. It almost happens, but then I think Nicky focuses on his job and thinks they shouldn't be doing this and backs away from it.

"I think if they'd have met in any other circumstance, things might be different. Nicky does panic – potentially, it could be a problem in Home Farm if they get together."

Despite this setback, it may only be a matter of time before Gabby and Nicky do give into temptation.

Rosie teased: "Gabby tries her very best. There's some really good stuff coming up and we've just read some new scripts.

"They both fancy each other. It's obvious and I think the audience are going to be egging them on, to be honest. They'll see two young people who fancy each other, and it's very obvious what they are going to want from that. But whether they get it or not, who knows?

"Nicky also understands some of the problems that Gabby has had with Kim. Gabby explains about how much hard work it is and how it's really hard to please Kim. Nicky tells her not to worry and says she's great – he's really encouraging Gabby.

"Gabby has never really had that before – a male actually be supportive of her. So that's going to make her even more head over heels. It's going to be really good – I think the audience are going to want us to be together. It's good vibes."
