Coronation Street has aired another death in serial killer Stephen Reid's exit storyline – but, this time, it was the man himself in a body bag.

Friday's (October 13) drama-filled end to Stephen's long-running storyline saw the serial killer die after being mowed down on the cobbles by Peter Barlow's car.

The last image viewers saw of Stephen was him being pronounced dead and loaded into a body bag, thus ending his reign of terror over Weatherfield.

Stephen was caught out for his lies and misdeeds this week, after spending a year escaping justice for the murders of Jenny's ex-boyfriend Leo, as well as Leo's father Teddy and the factory's business rival Rufus.

The killer finally went down after a prolonged hostage situation where he'd knocked out his own niece Sarah Barlow with a beer bottle and then used the smashed bottle to threaten Jenny.

"Believe me, you do not want to mess with me today," he promised.

Jenny dropped to the floor and tried to wake an unconscious Sarah while Stephen screamed at her to tell him where she'd hid his passport.

"I swear, I don't want to do this, but if you don't tell me where it is, I will hurt you now," Stephen warned.

His threats caused Jenny to realise that Stephen was the one who killed Leo, so she said she'd only hand over the passport if the killer explained what he'd done.

However, once Stephen shared his twisted reasons for killing Leo and Teddy, Jenny insisted she'd never tell him where the passport was hidden.

Stephen broke down as Jenny furiously pressed him as to why he'd resorted to murder, admitting that he never wanted his mum Audrey to see him fail.

"If that's all, just go, run away before Audrey sees who you really are. Passport's in my bag," she relented.

Stephen then tried to force Jenny to come with him to Thailand, but she kneed him and ran for her life. The front of the pub was barred, meaning Jenny couldn't get out as she screamed for help.

Out on the street, Adam Barlow and Sean Tully tried to pull the doors open after hearing Jenny's cries. Stephen caught up with Jenny and threatened that nobody would be able to stop him.

Suddenly, Sarah whacked Stephen across the back of the head and quipped: "Wanna bet?"

Adam and other residents had made their way into the pub to help Sarah and Jenny, only for Stephen to grab the broken bottle and take Jenny hostage.

With the Platts, Michael, Carla, Sean, Elaine, Sally and others looking on, Stephen dragged Jenny out onto the cobbles with the weapon held against her throat.

As Stephen barked orders at David to bring him a car, Audrey turned up to try to talk sense to her son. She urged Stephen to "give up" before it's too late, but he had no such intention.

Stephen let Jenny go at the last possible moment, but as he turned around, he was mowed down by Peter Barlow's car! Peter sat behind the wheel in stunned silence, not believing what he'd just done.

Medics were soon on the scene – and Stephen was shown being zipped into a bodybag. As the residents of Weatherfield struggled to come to grips with what happened, Peter was taken into custody.

Will Peter face consequences for killing Stephen?
