Stu Carpenter has had a breakthrough in his murder case in Coronation Street.

The Weatherfield resident has been struggling to rebuild his relationship with his daughter Bridget and granddaughter Eliza because he was coerced into confessing to murder decades ago.

Friday's episode (September 30) had a series of breakthroughs for Stu, starting with lawyer Dee-Dee Bailey agreeing to help with his case after discovering gaps in the police investigation years earlier.

Alya was off asking questions of her own of Stu's daughter, but was frustrated when Bridget backed up her mum's story about the murder of young Charlie.

Dee-Dee had better luck when she dug up the address of the police detective, Lennox, who'd interrogated Stu into confessing.

Rather than wait for Dee-Dee to pursue the matter, Stu swiped the paper and secretly went to Lennox's home.

Lennox's wife answered the door and made out that he'd died when Stu explained himself, only for Stu to find the man himself in the garden moments later.

Stu was finally able to confront Lennox for interrogating him for three days until he broke all those years ago.

When Lennox seemed unmoved by the story, Stu begged the former cop to admit he'd actually been the killer so he could clear his name.

This is when Lennox's wife intervened to insist her husband has dementia and had no memory of anything Stu was describing. Stu was then forced to flea after she threatened to call the police.

What Stu didn't realise was his daughter Bridget had watched the entire scene from a distance, hearing a tacit admission from Lennox's wife that he'd been involved in wrongdoing.

Stu felt as if he'd lost his last chance to clear his name, but was thrilled when Bridget showed up to ask if he'd like to visit Eliza for the first time.

Is this a new start for Stu?
