Coronation Street actress Shelley King has spoken about her character Yasmeen Nazir being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection, saying that Yasmeen's abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) will make her doubt how she could have got it.
After feeling unwell, a shocked Yasmeen will be told by Dr Gaddas (Christine Mackie) that she has tested positive for chlamydia. Following her recent discovery that Geoff has been secretly using an escort agency, she believes that this is where the infection has come from.
According to Shelley, when Geoff finds out he insists that she could have picked up the infection from her cheating ex-husband Sharif, planting doubt in Yasmeen's mind.

"The thing is Dr Gaddas told her that it could lie dormant for some time, so when Geoff says that about Sharif she believes that could be the truth," she said. "It is a doubt in her mind that maybe she has been carrying it for years without knowing. Again Geoff is cleverly playing on that."
Yasmeen's ordeal at Geoff's hands has been getting progressively worse over time and she is currently in a dire situation, with Geoff withholding food from his wife and locking her inside. Things will come to a head next week after Geoff takes Yasmeen to the Rovers and she feels unable to seek help, despite being desperate to escape Geoff.

"She believes she has been unreasonable. She thinks everyone else thinks she is unreasonable... She is in a state of confusion, hunger and self-doubt. How can she go to anyone?"
After they arrive home Yasmeen is once again tormented by Geoff as he eats in front of her without giving her any food and when she is backed into a corner she hits him with a wine bottle in self defence, causing him to collapse to the floor bleeding.
