Never mind all the serial killers, the dodgy dealings and the chance that your peaceful neighbourhood will be interrupted by a screaming match every now and then – the real thing stopping us from wanting to live in Weatherfield is because it's so darn expensive.

Sure, you may get a glass of red wine for £3 if you're lucky, but over the years Coronation Street has proven that you need a lot of disposable income if you want to enjoy a social life on the cobbles, charging anything from £6.95 for a glass of Prosecco to £9.50 for a glass of wine.

And now it looks like you can't even buy a bunch of flowers without going bankrupt – although, on this occasion, it's less about the cost of living and more about Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) getting her own back.

At the beginning of Wednesday's double bill, Gary Windass (Mikey North) dropped by Preston's Petals on the pretence of buying some flowers for Izzy, believing that Mary had bought the chest of drawers that he'd stashed £600 cash in.

As Mary started setting up the shop for the day, Gary took the opportunity to rifle through her drawers, only to angrily accuse Mary of stealing his money when she caught him in the act.

"The brazen cheek of the man," Mary said. "I catch you red-handed, and you accuse me of being a thief!"

And when Izzy coincidentally popped into the florists for a card, Mary knew exactly what to do, as she revealed to Izzy that Gary was planning on buying her something for being such a good friend and mother, before charging Gary the extortionate price of £25.

By the look on Gary's face there, he knows he's being overcharged, but he can't argue with Mary about the price with Izzy right there now, can he?

And one thing all Corrie viewers could agree on was that the flowers were definitely not worth what Mary charged for them:

But that was exactly the point, as Coronation Street's official Twitter account later explained.

"Exactly!" the account wrote. "It was Mary making Gary pay for his behaviour!"

Well played, Mary. Well played indeed.

Unfortunately, Mary also let slip that Ryan had a chance to rifle through the item of furniture before it reached her, and Gary quickly cottoned on to that piece of information too.

"I know exactly what's happened," he added ominously.

And considering there's no love lost between Gary and Ryan at the moment, that's not exactly a good thing...

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
