Netflix has released a first trailer for survival sci-fi The Last House, starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as a couple trapped inside their own home. The pair and their two children have no chance of breaking free, just as the world is taken over by an unknown menace.

From director Louis Leterrier, best known for Fast X and Now You See Me, the film sees the parents and kids trying to leave the house, before discovering in horror that they can't escape the comforts despite their best efforts.

As the quartet look for ways to figure out an escape, a card in the trailer informs us that they've had to adjust to their singular, terrifying new normal and survive for over 1,000 days.

The family of four have had to ration provisions and devote a room to plant farming so they could survive their ordeal, all while realising that having each other might not be enough to make it through.

In a scene from the nerve-wracking trailer, the family finds some solace in knowing that their neighbours seem to have fallen under the same spell as them, though a horrifying prospect soon sinks in.

What to Read Next

As the whole world appears to be unable to go outside, an otherworldly threat could be ready to infiltrate their safe havens. Things take a turn, however, when a woman — who has inexplicably made it outside — begs the protagonist for help during a thunderstorm.

"The Last House challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity," said Leterrier in an interview with Tudum.

"This is an ordinary family's worst nightmare, pushing them to their limits to protect each other and exposing the fragility of security — and the desperate fight to reclaim it," added the filmmaker.

Moura, who recently garnered an Oscar nomination, said of the film: "I was so intrigued by the notion of what it might mean to wake up one day and be physically sealed in your home — and not even understand why."

The Last House starts streaming on Netflix from 7 August.
