Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for Ryan Gosling's new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary.

Based on Andy Weir's novel of the same name, the film follows Gosling as a school teacher named Ryland Grace who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there.

The synopsis reads: "As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out.

"He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone."

Directed by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Liz Kingsman and Milana Vayntrub in supporting roles.

As the trailer shows, when Ryland is recruited for 'Project Hail Mary', he says that he doesn't know anything about being an astronaut and is just a middle school teacher.

"I put the not in astronaut. I've never done anything - I've never done a space - I can't even moonwalk," he says.

He is seemingly convinced to go into space and is subsequently shown taking on the dangerous mission before encountering an unusual structure.

"So, I met an alien," Ryland says in a video diary. "He's kinda growing on me. At least he's not growing in me, you know. Which was a concern for a little while."

Drew Goddard has adapted the screenplay, having previously adapted The Martian (another Weir novel) for Ridley Scott's 2015 movie starring Matt Damon.

In a review of the Project Hail Mary book, Ready Player One and Ready Player Two author Ernest Cline described it as "one of the most original, compelling, and fun voyages I've ever taken".

Project Hail Mary will be released on 20 March 2026.
