Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Hollyoaks star Steph Waring has teased a dark past act between her character Cindy Cunningham and her niece Beth Keane ahead of her return to the village in coming weeks.
It has already been revealed that despite Beth being given away by her biological mum, Cindy's sister Dawn Cunningham, she and Cindy have met and had a former friendship prior to their return to Chester.

Steph left Hollyoaks almost two years ago, and will now reprise the role of Cindy, which she first played 30 years ago back in 1996.
Speaking exclusively to Inside Soap, Steph shed some more light on the relationship between Beth and Cindy, and the incident that will cause tension between them going forward.

"Beth is Cindy’s niece, and we’ll learn that they had a connection off screen in the past," Steph reveals. "Beth was looking for family and reached out to Cindy, then something happened that was unforgivable."
Coming back to the village also means that Cindy will reunite with her former flame – and Beth's older brother – Darren Osborne. Although there's romance in their past, Steph doesn't think that could be on the cards for their future, as Darren is now married to Nancy Osborne.
"They have a very close friendship but it’s not spilling into anything romantic anymore," explains Steph. "Darren is trying to get to the bottom of why Cindy is really back.

"She eventually does confide one of her secrets to him, although she’s got many more! Cindy trusts Darren, regardless of what she does he always forgives her and wants her to be okay."
Another of Cindy's previous lovers still living in the village is Tony Hutchinson, who recently lost his wife Diane Hutchinson to terminal ovarian cancer. Now that Tony's single, could there be romance on the cards for them again?
"Actually, I’ve only had a few scenes with Nick [Pickard, aka Tony] so far," Steph reveals. "Cindy supports him, but in terms of something deeper I think we’ve been there and done that – they were married twice. But you never know!"
