The Naked Gun, the upcoming comedy film starring Liam Neeson, has released its first teaser trailer.

The film, which serves as both a reboot and the fourth instalment in the iconic franchise, sees Neeson take on the role of Frank Drebin Jr, a police officer who follows in the footsteps of his late father, who was played by Leslie Nielsen in the original films.

Ahead of its scheduled release on August 1, the first teaser has been released for the film, with the action beginning as local police officers circle a bank that is being raided by criminals.

Despite the heavy presence of law enforcement, a young girl manages to sneak into the bank and confront the criminals. They get a shock, however, with Frank Jr unveiling himself under the mask as he attacks them with the stick of a lollipop.

After saving the day and being asked of his identity, Frank Jr – with his underwear in full view – confirms himself as the “new version”. After greeting a photo of his father, we also get a glimpse at Paul Walter Hauser's Captain Ed Hocken Jr, the son of George Kennedy’s character from the original films.

Whilst there are no specific plot details for the film, the logline for the trailer does make a reference to Neeson's role in the Taken franchise, reading: “Only one man has the particular set of skills... to lead Police Squad and save the world!”

The original films, which were adapted from the 1982 series Police Squad!, saw Nielsen’s bumbling cop find himself in many precarious situations, with the first film – released in 1988 – being followed by The Smell of Fear and The Final Insult in 1991 and 1994, respectively.

The Naked Gun is scheduled to be released on August 1.
