The Northman, Robert Eggers' epic revenge thriller, will land on Netflix in the UK and Ireland on 28 August.

Boasting a stacked cast which includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, the film is loosely based on the Scandinavian legend of Amleth, a Viking prince seeking justice.

A famous medieval figure, Amleth's tragic tale served as the inspiration for Shakespeare's Hamlet, which would go on to inspire The Lion King and countless other adaptations.

In AD 895, a young Amleth witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandill War-Raven (Hawke), and the kidnapping of his mother, Queen Gudrún (Kidman), in a palace coup orchestrated by his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang).

Years later, a now grown-up Amleth (Skarsgård) remembers his oath of vengeance and sets out to kill Fjölnir and reclaim his kingdom.

Speaking exclusively with Digital Spy, Skarsgård revealed how he prepared for the role of Amleth.

"He is driven by fate," the actor mused. "Like an arrow, he moves forward through the world, and in order to understand him and that journey, I had to learn more about the mythology.

"The spiritual world that the Vikings believed in – how the Norns of fate had chosen this path for him. And that was a mindset that's quite different from [the] modern-day mindset. [It was] something I had to kind of absorb and understand."

The Northman will land on Netflix in the UK and Ireland on 28 August.
