A '00s psychological thriller starring Jodie Foster has experienced a sudden surge of popularity on Netflix.

Flightplan, directed by Robert Schwentke, follows Foster as a widowed American aircraft engineer, Kyle Pratt, who flies back to the US with her daughter Julia.

During the flight, she loses her daughter, with Kyle spending the flight looking for the six-year-old while at the same time trying to prove her sanity to those around her.

Also starring Peter Sarsgaard, Erika Christensen, Kate Beahan, Greta Scacchi, Sean Bean, and Matt Bomer, Flightplan was a box-office hit at the time of its release, grossing $223 million worldwide against a $55 million budget.

It received two Saturn Award nominations, but also had negative reviews from critics, holding a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, Flightplan has shot to number seven in the Netflix top 10 most-watched charts this week.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' consensus reads: "The actors are all on key here, but as the movie progresses, tension deflates as the far-fetched plot kicks in."

However, some critics saw positives in the film, with The Post NZ writing: "Fans of action flicks will lap this up, but for those expecting an adult thriller, the 11th-hour diversion into unexpected territory is unwelcome turbulence, marring what, up until then, had been a slick, smooth and extremely enjoyable ride."

Village Voice said: "We're starkly reminded that there's nothing quite so fickle as paranoia, and that some people are never more persuasive than when they're out of their minds."

The Washington Post added: "Succeeds admirably, both as a sophisticated psychological thriller and as an example of, if not great art, then superb craftsmanship."

"It's a tense, concise and elegantly shot film that creates a sense of menace from the very beginning - and in a way that's unusual," the San Francisco Chronicle concluded.

Flightplan caused controversy at the time of its release, with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants calling for an official boycott of the film due to the way flight attendants were portrayed.

They argued that flight attendants were shown as rude and unsympathetic towards a passenger in distress, arguing that the film could spread distrust towards airline workers.

Flightplan is streaming now on Netflix.
