July has a host of must-watch movies on the way that you need to check out in UK cinemas and on streaming.

From a twisty Netflix German thriller to a Paul Rudd comedy dubbed the "funniest movie of the year", there is quite a lot to look forward to in the next few weeks.

Here, Digital Spy has rounded-up six of the best to watch out for.

Brick

This twist-filled German movie comes from writer and director Philip Koch, and focuses on couple Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Olivia (Ruby O Fee) as they find themselves trapped in their apartment building by a brick wall. They must then work with their neighbours in order to escape.

Brick was called "a satisfying and watchable audience-pleaser" by Screen International, and no doubt is sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Superman

James Gunn's anticipated reboot of the iconic DC franchise finally hits the big screen this month, with David Corenswet taking on the role of the Man of Steel opposite Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor.

Superman is the first project from Gunn's rebooted DC Universe, and sees the character trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human side as Clark Kent from Kansas.

The movie also features For All Mankind's Edi Gathegi, Barry's Anthony Carrigan and The Rookie's Nathan Fillion in supporting roles – and keep an eye out for a big A-list cameo.

Friendship

Released in the US back in May, this comedy movie comes to British fans this month, and explores the theme of male friendship.

The film stars Saturday Night Live's Tim Robinson as a socially awkward marketing executive called Craig Waterman who yearns to be buddies with his new charismatic neighbour (played by Rudd).

Friendship has largely earned acclaim all round – sitting at an impressive 88% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes – with The Daily Beast calling it the "funniest film of the year". Andrew DeYoung's movie also features Pose's Kate Mara and Shazam's Jack Dylan Grazer.

Released in cinemas on 18 July in the UK.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The iconic Marvel franchise is back, as Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn take on the roles of the central foursome.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps follows the team as they try to protect their retro-futuristic 1960s world from villain Galactus (Ralph Ineson), with the movie marking the first project of the MCU's Phase Six era.

Alongside the four stars, fans can expect appearances from Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, as well as John Malkovich, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne and Sarah Niles.

Released in cinemas on 24 July in the UK.

Happy Gilmore 2

Nearly three decades after Adam Sandler last took up his gold clubs as the titular character, Happy Gilmore returns for a new Netflix sequel.

The movie will see the former ice hockey player-turned golf wiz return to the game, now a five-time Tour Championship winner, with Christopher McDonald back as rival Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen returning as Virginia Venit and Ben Stiller back as the villainous Hal L.

Sandler's real-life daughters Sunny and Sadie are set to join the cast for the sequel, as are the likes of American football player Travis Kelce and music superstar Bad Bunny.

Available to stream on Netflix from 25 July in the UK.

An Honest Life

Described as a thriller about "betrayal, class and the appeal of living outside the law", Swedish movie An Honest Life is based on the novel by Joakim Zander.

The plot follows Simon, a student who arrives at law school in Lund only to find disappointment. He is then drawn to a young woman called Max during a protest, falling in love – though as he gets involved in her world of anarchists, he finds himself trapped before realising too late the damage he has done.

Starring Simon Lööf, Nora Rios and Peter Andersson, the film comes from Blackwater director Mikael Marcimain.
