Marvel star Josh Brolin has joined a new thriller that tells the story of a man swallowed by a whale.

Described as "The Martian meets 127 Hours", the movie is an adaptation of Daniel Kraus' best-selling novel Whalefall and focuses on a scuba diver in search of his deceased father's remains.

After being swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale, the diver has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. Though he is close to giving up on life, the young man finds a surprising reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

According to Deadline, Brolin is in talks to star opposite Euphoria's Austin Abrams, with details regarding roles yet to be announced. Meanwhile, director Brian Duffield will serve as a producer, and will co-write the script alongside author Kraus.

The movie, which was previously labelled a survival thriller, is one of many upcoming projects set to star Brolin.

What to Read Next

Brolin and Abrams will be working together on Zach Cregger's upcoming horror movie Weapons, which has been described as "an interrelated, multistory horror epic" in the same vein as 1999's Magnolia.

The actor is also attached to Edgar Wright's The Running Man remake where he will play the villainous TV executive, opposite Glen Powell's lead role as Ben Richards.

Scheduled for a November 7 release date, the remake will follow the same premise as the 1987 movie, but will be set in 2025 in a dystopian United States, overrun by violence and poverty.

The movie, which wrapped filming last August, features a star-studded cast including Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Daryl McCormack and Thomas Haden Church.
