Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter has become a Netflix hit, following an underwhelming performance at the box office.

The Spider-Man villain movie stars Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, the son of a crime lord who is determined to prove he is the greatest hunter in the land. The film serves as the final instalment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which also included the Venom trilogy and the much-panned Madame Web.

Kraven the Hunter didn’t receive much praise from fans and critics alike on its release last year, landing in third place at the US box office, earning just $11 million on its opening weekend. It didn’t fare too well in reviews either, currently on a brutal Rotten Tomatoes score of 15% from critic reviews.

But, it seems the film is getting a new lease of life since being added to Netflix, landing in third place on the streamer’s Top Ten global movies list in the first week of release, based solely on its US release.

At the time of writing, the film has been watched 7.1 million times, beaten only by the likes of SpongeBob spinoff Plankton: The Movie and the new Millie Bobby Brown sci-fi adventure The Electric State.

On the film's release last year, Digital Spy gave the film an overall negative review, but praised Aaron Taylor-Johnson and some of the film’s action details.

"Much like Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter finally comes to cinemas this Friday after multiple release-date delays, and with heavy signs of changes in the edit. If these were aimed at salvaging it, they probably only broke it further,” we wrote at the time.

Kraven the Hunter is available now on Netflix US. In the UK, the film will be available via Sky Cinema.
