Spider-Man: Brand New Day is keeping fan hype high as the sequel's big bad hasn't been revealed just yet and is "unlike anything we've seen", Tom Holland confirmed during the ongoing movie press tour.

Not only is Brand New Day hiding Spider-Man newcomer Sadie Sink, as the Stranger Things actor is absent from the extended trailer, but Marvel and Sony are also keeping the lid on the major threat Peter Parker is up against this time around — and the two could be one and the same if the rumours of Sink playing X-Men character Jean Grey proved to be true.

Speaking at a recent fan event in Berlin alongside co-star Zendaya, who plays MJ, Holland teased an unexpected villain for Brand New Day.

"The villain that we have in this new movie, which is still very much a secret, is I think unlike anything we've seen in one of these movies before," the protagonist said in a video interview with ProSieben.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the fourth Holland outing picks up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following Peter's difficult decision to erase all memories of him from the world, he continues protecting New York City anonymously as nobody, not even girlfriend MJ and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), has any idea of who he is.

While there was no trace of Sink in the trailer, the clip does include a meeting between Peter and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) as well as a glimpse of Severance star Tramell Tillman as Bill Metzger.

The new character brings Spidey up to speed about a new, invisible menace only Peter seems to be immune too. Again, all clues appear to point to Jean Grey, but whether Sink plays her or whether the iconic character will feature in the movie at all remain speculation at this stage.

As Peter is also struggling with some spiralling thoughts, he crosses paths with Ned, who's determined to find out the identity of Spider-Man so he could thank him for saving him and his classmates back in high school, and MJ, who has a new love interest.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is released in UK cinemas on 29 July and in US cinemas on 31 July.
