After several delays that pushed its initial release date back three years, development for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is finally picking up pace, and we have another exciting update.

The long-awaited follow-up to 2023's Across the Spider-Verse is due to hit the big screen in June 2027, with the story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) continuing as he finds himself trapped in an alternative universe.

While audiences still have just under a year to wait for their next dose of animated action, filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – who both produced and co-wrote the film – have given a tantalising update regarding its progress.

"We are deep, deep in it," Miller told The Empire Film Podcast. "We’re actually going today to the IMAX headquarters to see what the footage looks like at scale, and to make sure that it has the resolution that it needs to look gorgeous.

"We're chugging away in the edit room with the team, and it's coming together really well. It's a lot of movie, and a lot to do. You've got to keep doing something that hasn't been done before. That's all you got to do. Easy!"

Lord, who recently directed acclaimed sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary with his filmmaking partner, added: "The thing that's a joy about those pictures is that everyone on the crew is so good at what they do.

"So you just sit around, marvel at all these brilliant artists, and then we get to work with these great filmmakers, sit in a room all day, and just try to make everything incrementally better together. It's a lot of fun."

The animated film was originally due to be released in March 2024, with it being developed at the same time as its predecessor. The first delay came as a result of a pause in production, before the 2023 SAG-AFTRA lengthened the period of inactivity.

Production eventually resumed, with Bob Persichetti and Justin K Thompson being unveiled as the new directors. The pair had worked on the first two instalments in varying capacities, while Lord and Miller are co-writing the screenplay alongside David Callaham.

Though Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to be the conclusion of a trilogy, the series will continue elsewhere, with spin-offs centring on Spider-Woman and Spider-Punk reportedly in the works.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 18 June 2027.
