Anya Taylor-Joy's new sci-fi thriller The Gorge has set an impressive streaming record for Apple TV+.

The movie was released on the platform last week, and has already become the streamer's biggest movie launch ever, according to Deadline.

The site adds that the film has helped boost new viewers by 80%, though specific viewing numbers haven't been confirmed.

The movie, which was described as "inventive" by Variety, stars the Furiosa actor and Whiplash's Miles Teller as two snipers tasked with guarding a mysterious gorge.

It has attracted a 64% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Empire suggesting it serves "a frothy B-pic stew", while The Guardian said there "are touches of above-average streaming craft here, distancing it from the standard Netflix equivalent".

The news comes after another big Apple record was broken, with season 2 of Severance recently becoming the streamer's most-watched season launch.

The show is now Apple TV+'s top series ever, taking in more viewers than any other show and increasing new subscribers by 126% in the first few weeks of January.

The Gorge is available to watch now on Apple TV+.
