Rebecca Ferguson's dystopian sci-fi thriller Silo is your absolute must watch, as season three returns today. The Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man star returns in the lead role after the second season finale's tense cliffhanger, and there is a lot to come in the new episodes.
Season two was a massive hit with fans, with one viewer on Rotten Tomatoes praising it as an "exhilarating extension of [an] already compelling narrative", while another admitted to being "completely hooked".
Silo follows the lives of the 10,000 people living underground in a dystopian society under mysterious circumstances.
The next instalment of the series will pick up after season two's finale, which ended with Ferguson's Jules' life hanging in the balance.
Her fate was confirmed by the season three trailer, which saw the character alive but suffering from severe memory loss as the synopsis teased: "In the present, Juliette 'Jules' Nichols survives her forced "cleaning" but returns with memory loss as the silo recovers from rebellion and faces a dangerous new threat."
Ferguson gives an even richer performance this time around as a Jules trying to build herself back up piece by piece.
What to Read Next
It is an absolutely captivating lens through which to experience this familiar character as she suddenly becomes out of touch with herself, making her intriguingly unrecognisable.
However, at her core, Jules is Jules and so the same tenacity and rebelliousness persists, even if it initially looks a little bit different.
Season three is also set to unveil the origin story set centuries earlier, dubbed as the 'Before Times', as the synopsis expands further: "Meanwhile, in the 'Before Times,' journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) and Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) uncover a conspiracy that pulls them into a chain of events with catastrophic, irreversible consequences."
Henwick and Zukerman's journey adds a layer of intrigue fans didn't even know they needed.
As the relentless pair get closer and closer to the truth, they infuse Silo with more nuance and a new layer of emotional depth that links the past and the present in its pain, suffering and unwavering determination.
It also helps that the pair are the perfect scene partners with a chemistry that is breathtakingly impressive.
Showrunner Graham Yost gave more insight about the series, which is based on Hugh Howey's New York Times bestselling trilogy, and the unfolding mystery this season during an interview with Radio Times, saying: "There is this thing called the Safeguard, which is... this other silo can kill a silo within minutes essentially by poisoning them.
"And why would they do that? How? What is going on?"
He added: "Then we start to peel back a little bit that... well, in Silo 17, they all went outside without cleaning suits on and they didn't die for quite some time. What happened? Well, that's a big mystery. That's something we will eventually... we hope to get the chance to answer that."
Returning to star alongside Ferguson in the ensemble cast will be Common and Alexandria Riley as husband and wife duo Robert and Camille Sims, Harriet Walter as Martha Walker, Chinaza Uche as deputy Paul Billings, Avi Nash as Lukas, Shane McRae as Knox, Remmie Milner as Shirley, Rick Gomez as Patrick Kennedy, Billy Postlethwaite as deputy Hank, Clare Perkins as Carla McLain and Steve Zahn as Solo/ Jimmy Conroy.
They will be joined by new cast members ER's Laura Innes, Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay, and The Bay and Grantchester actor Morven Christie, as well as Reed Birney, Matt Craven and Colin Hanks.
Those truly engrained into the fandom will be pleased to learn that not only has Silo been renewed for a fourth and final season it has already wrapped filming.
