Following the first official look at Christopher Nolan's new movie The Odyssey, fans have pointed out a major error.

The upcoming film, which is based on the classic 8th century Homer poem, is set to star Matt Damon as King of Ithaca, Odysseus, as he journeys home after the Trojan War to reunite with his wife Penelope.

Yesterday, an official still was unveiled of Damon adorned in armour – though many have pointed out a glaring inaccuracy in that he is sporting Hoplite armour, a later historical period, rather than the more fitting Mycenaean era look. It's also considerably less ornate considering what a king might be expected to wear.

"Armour here is like 600 years out of date… Nolan you have failed the first test," one user wrote on Bluesky, another adding: "God forbids Hollywood of showing us bronze armor and saturated colors of the *checks note* MYCENAEAN BRONZE AGE."

A third posted a more modern boat, writing: "Given the inaccuracy of his attire, is there any chance the ships are correct, or are we just going to end up with this?"

Posting a still from Family Guy, a fourth suggested on X/Twitter that the animated show "should not have a more accurate depiction of Bronze Age armor than 99% of all media".

However, some did defend the choice, one writing: "This is fine. Anyone acting like the Dendra panoply (full body armour) would look good on film has never seen classic Doctor Who."

"Mycanenan armor would look interesting, but this is pure classical fantasy. Accept it," another said.

As well as Damon, The Odyssey stars Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o and Robert Pattinson, while the film itself will be shot on IMAX.

The Odyssey is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 17, 2026.
